Farewell of AIR's three senior officials

Sh. H. K. Pani, Additional Director General posted at Directorate General, All India Radio, New Delhi is retiring on 31st May, 2013. 

Major Somesh C. Jhingan, Deputy Director General, Admn. & Finance, DG:AIR, New Delhi is completing his tenure of deputation to All India Radio the same day. 

Sh. H. C. Punetha, Legal Expert, AIR is also retiring tomorrow. 

Sh.L. K. Mandloi, Director General, All India Radio honoured the three officials of AIR for completing their tenure in All India Radio on 31 May 2013 at a well attended gathering of other AIR officials today.

Services rendered by these three senior officials were highly appreciated during the ceremony.

Brig.(Retd.) V. A. M. Hussain, Member(Personnel), Prasar Bharati and Sh.Yuvraj Bajaj, Engineer-in-Chief, All India Radio were also present.

All India Radio Chennai completes 75 years

MUMBAI: All India Radio (AIR) Chennai will be completing 75 years of its service to the nation on 16 June 2013.

From the past one year, the station has been airing all the old archives like music, plays, and speeches of prominent personalities to celebrate its platinum jubilee this year. On 18 June, a function to celebrate the platinum jubilee will be held at Vani Mahal in T Nagar.

Speaking with Radioandmusic.com, Chennai AIR programme executive (coordination) Selvakumar said, “The year-long special program based on platinum jubilee will be held on 18 June as we have planned a celebration on that day. The event will be aired live on AIR in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from 4.30 to 8.30pm.”

Prasar Bharati CEO Jawahar Sircar, AIR director general LD Mondloi and Staff Selection Commission (2009 to 2013) retired chairman NK Raghupathy will be gracing the event. The functions will take place at Vani Mahal in T Nagar. Classical concert by M Balamuralikrishna will be attraction of the function. Chennai station is currently headed by additional director general KP Srinivasan.

The Chennai AIR was inaugurated on June 16, 1938 by Rajaji, the then premier of Madras Presidency. His inaugural speech will be broadcast on 16 June at 7 am in Chennai.

In 1924, Carnavalli V Krishnaswamy, a Manchester-trained engineer of the Corporation of Madras, founded the Madras Presidency Radio Club and started the first broadcasting service in India. When the Club ran into financial difficulties, Krishnaswamy persuaded the Corporation to take over Madras Broadcasting in 1929.

All India Radio took over the Madras Municipal Broadcasting Service in 1938. AIR started functioning at Marshalls Road, Egmore and it moved to its present location in July 1954.

In 1977, India’s first ever-regular FM service was broadcast from this station.

All India Radio in collaboration with IGCA organised a special Homage Concert dedicated to the violin maestro Lalgudi G Jayaraman at Indira Gandhi Centre for the Arts Auditorium

After floral tributes by Shri Chinmay Garekhan, President IGCA, Shri Leeladhar Mandloi, DG:AIR and other dignitaries present there, it was a musical homeage on the violin by Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and Lalgudi Smt. Vijayalakshmi (son and daughter and desciples of the maestro) who presented choicest of compositions both popularised by their mentor as well as marvellous creations of the maestro. They were accompanied on the Mridangam by Thiruvaroor Bhaktavatsalam and on the Ghatam by Tripoonitura Radhakrishnan who provided excellent support.

 The nearly two hours concert began with the varnam composed by the maestro in the Raag Devgandhari in Adi Tala. Then came a few compositions of Tyagraja presented with rich improvisation, prestine classical purity and soaked in melody. The main item was a Lalgudi pancharatam of Tyagraja in the Raag Todi set to Adi Tala followed by Tani Avartanam played on Mridangam and Ghatam by Thiruvaroor Bhaktavatsalam and by Tripoonitura Radhakrishnan respectively. The concert concluded with a composition of poet Subramania Bharti tuned by the maestro and Tilana in raag Tilang composed by the maestro.

It was indeed a fitting tribute to the maestro with the elite audience leaving the auditorium in a blissful state and as highly satisfied music lovers.

MUMBAI: Advertising and additional resources has pushed the revenues of All India Radio (AIR) to 15 percent compared to its earnings last year. 

Speaking with Radioandmusic.com, All India Radio’s Director General Sh. Leela Dhar Mandloi says, "As per our revenue is concerned, we gained this year in comparison to last year. We have recorded at least 15 per cent increase in the revenue." 

Over the years AIR has been recognized for creating awareness about social issues, government policies and schemes, but the radio broadcasters is adapting to changing demands of the listeners and is increasing its entertainment quotient. In its zest to build new target audience and enhance reach, the station is building up content that interests and entertains its listeners. 

Moreover, Mandloi also brought to notice that AIR has been very particular about disseminating crucial global news in the remote areas of the country and acting as a true national radio broadcaster. AIR signs MOU with different radio stations around the globe to enhance the quantity and quality in its programming. "AIR has its network in border areas, forest areas and rural areas meanwhile private FM stations are limited to towns and metros. Every institution that enters into partnership with AIR their main aim is to reach the rural audience in the remote areas," says Mandloi. 

He further highlights that television, internet and private FM stations are not available in remote areas and it becomes the responsibility of AIR to spread information of global happenings and this is one of the major reasons for such co-operation and partnerships. 

In the era of internet, world is getting smaller and smaller with respect to information but radio is still the only platform in areas where internet or any new forms of technology is possibly interrupted. "We are in the global era where people want to get more and more information about the world. There are people in different parts of the world who fail to have access to internet facility yet wish to avail international information. So we take that information to them through our programmes," states Mandloi. 

Mandloi adds, "We exchange our programs with any institution we sign a MOU with whereby they use our program and we use their program." 

Recently, AIR has signed a radio partnership MoU with the National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC) for coverage of scheduled tribes’ related schemes.
