The PM's first outing on radio may dominate the entire broadcasting space as it will also be run by all FM and community radio stations across country.

The public service broadcasters are planning to provide the audio feed and visuals free of cost to all private radio channels as well as news channels.

AIR will prepare a transcript of PM's address, which is likely to be in Hindi, to be later translated into 24 regional languages and 16 foreign ones.

AIR would repeat the telecast in regional languages on its regional channels on the evening of October 3.

PM Modi's radio show will be first such programme in the last three decades.

Earlier, PM Indira Gandhi, until her assassination in 1984, regularly used AIR to talk to the nation.

Experts also feel that PM's clear diction in Hindi makes his voice perfect for a radio programme.

Since, radio and FM stations have a far wider reach, than any other mass media in the country, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is already assured of its success.

'Man Ki Baat': PM Modi's First Radio Address on October 3 may dominate the entire broadcasting space

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first radio address, to be carried on October 3 on All India Radio, may dominate the entire broadcasting space as audio and visuals are likely to be carried on all FM and community radio stations along with news and current affairs TV channels.

Officials said the programme titled 'Man ki Baat' may be recorded on October 2.

The programme will be broadcast on the entire AIR network at 11 am on October 3 while Doordarshan is planning to carry the contents of the programme along with suitable footage, officials added.

Sources said the public service broadcasters are planning to provide the audio feed and visuals free of cost to all private radio channels as well as news and current affairs channels which express interest in the footage.

They said it is hoped the Prime Minister's 'Man ki Baat' programme should reach the maximum number of people in the country.

A senior official said that post recording of Mr Modi's address, the All India Radio (AIR) will prepare a transcript to be later translated in regional languages. The AIR would repeat the telecast in regional languages on its regional channels on the evening of October 3, the official said.

When contacted, AIR DG F Sheheryar said it was a "great encouragement" that the Prime Minister had chosen the public service broadcaster.

A senior Doordarshan official said they were considering options on how best to telecast the event.

Officials said people who are interested in conveying their thoughts, ideas or questions to Mr Modi should do it through the Mygov website. The Prime Minister, they said, is expected to respond to some of the feedback received from people on the website.

Modi pilots live radio show to reach the masses

Twitter-savvy Prime Minister Narendra Modi is turning to the country's oldest radio station to make his voice heard even in the farthest Himalayan hamlets and most distant deserts.

On Oct. 3, Modi will go live on public service All India Radio (AIR) from New Delhi for about 50 minutes, in a pilot of a show he hopes will become a weekly opportunity to reach up to two-thirds of India's 1.2 billion people.

The maiden radio broadcast, announced on the website mygov.in, will be quickly translated into 24 Indian languages and 16 foreign ones.
"We are still working on how to get everything arranged," said a senior official at the radio station known for news broadcasts delivered in a cut-glass English accent.

"None of the prime ministers in the last three decades have used our services in this manner."

Although eclipsed in recent years by satellite television, radio is still the main source of news and information for many Indians, particularly in rural areas.
Modi has assiduously used Facebook and Twitter, where he has about 6.4 million followers, to bypass the news media and communicate his thoughts, spurring editors to complain about a lack of two-way communication and debate.

Since taking office in May, the 64-year old leader has cut back on access for India's lively commercial news media, and stepped up the role of state television broadcaster Doordarshan in getting his message heard.

Indira Gandhi, prime minister for four terms spanning the late sixties until her assassination in 1984, was the last leader to have regularly used AIR to talk to the nation.

Many Indians say Modi is the first prime minister since Gandhi to use charisma and communication skills to carve out a more personalized leadership role.

Officials at India's broadcast ministry said Modi was keen to turn the radio address into an interactive session soon and would like to take questions from citizens.

Modi made an interactive broadcast on Teachers' Day this month that was viewed in schools nationwide.

Hundreds of AIR employees across India will monitor Modi's first address to avoid glitches in the live broadcast, variously dubbed "Ghar Ghar mein Modi" ("Modi in Every Home") or "PM jan jan ke saath" ("The Prime Minister is with Everyone").

Modi's clear diction in Hindi would make him ideal for radio, said one AIR journalist who asked not to be identified. AIR is the only radio station India permits to broadcast news.

Teachers’ Day talk over, PM turns on radio

New Delhi, Sept. 25: Narendra Modi’s office today asked All India Radio to make arrangements for the Prime Minister’s first radio talk on October 3 but some listeners could end up with a bonus — an “audiovisual” experience across even private channels.

A government source said the PMO wants “every electronic vehicle”, including national broadcaster Doordarshan and private television and radio channels, apart from all AIR mediums, to carry the Vijaya Dashami-day address to the nation that will be recorded a day earlier.

“Not only has AIR been asked to ensure the grand success of the special transmission, the information and broadcasting ministry has also been asked to issue an advisory to private TV channels and FM radio channels to carry the Prime Minister’s message,” the official said.

“The Prime Minister wants to connect with the masses through every possible medium. Though this would be an audio message of about 20 minutes, channels can play pre-recorded visuals of the Prime Minister along with it. But it won’t be an interactive talk, the Prime Minister will speak on issues concerning various areas of governance.”

Sources said it would be the first time private electronic media would be “advised” to carry a special broadcast that is not part of occasions such as Independence Day and Republic Day.

Earlier this month, on Teachers’ Day, Modi had addressed and interacted with students through a first-of-its-kind video link-up. Then, too, the government had asked schools across the country to make arrangements for the telecast and ensure that students sat through it.

Following protests, the government had clarified that whether schools showed the event or not was “completely voluntary”, but many schools didn’t take chances.

About the October 3 broadcast, called PM on Radio, the government source said the advisory would be issued soon. “We can’t ensure the broadcast is carried by the private electronic media as they are not controlled by the government but we will issue an advisory to news and current affairs channels and private FM radio in a day or two,” the official said.

The highlights of the address would be propagated through various platforms on social media. To get people interested enough to tune in, a cross-media publicity blitz will start from tomorrow.

The radio programme — the first in a series of planned fortnightly broadcasts by Modi, according to AIR sources — wouldn’t have any specific topic. But the PMO has asked AIR officials to prepare a list of topics, including economic development, employment generation, education, women’s safety, foreign policy and people’s participation in governance, following suggestions on the website mygov.nic.in that the government launched about two months back.

Hundreds of AIR employees across the country will monitor the address to avoid glitches in the live broadcast, which will be translated into 13 regional languages for non-Hindi-speaking states.

“AIR’s home service comprises 413 stations across the country, reaching nearly 92 per cent of the country’s geographical area and 99.19 per cent of the population. It serves a wide spectrum of socio-economic and cultural diversity. The Prime Minister’s broadcast will help strengthen our brand value,” a senior AIR official said.

A journalist at AIR said Modi’s clear diction in Hindi makes him ideal for radio. “He is, perhaps, the first Prime Minister who is using charisma and communication skills to carve out a more personalised leadership role,” the journalist said.

PM’s Radio programme on 3rd October 2014 at 11 AM

On 3rd October 2014 Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will share his thoughts with the people of India through the radio. The Prime Minister’s radio programme will be held at 11:00 AM on 3rd October, which is also Vijaya Dashmi.

The Prime Minister is expected to share his thoughts on a variety of issues. A separate Open Forum has been created on MyGov for citizens to share their comments for the forthcoming radio programme.

Citizens should share ideas and best practices on development, good governance and other issues. The Prime Minister would refer to the Open Forum before the programme and may even refer to some of the points made on the Forum.

Earlier, on 6th September 2014 the Prime Minister talked about connecting with people through radio and sought ideas. He has Tweeted:
Let’s connect on the Radio…want your ideas. http://t.co/9C4URtOP6t
— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) September 6, 2014
Since then there has been an extremely positive feedback on the idea of having a radio programme. Netizens across India have welcomed this idea.

The Radio programme is seen as one more instance of the Prime Minister innovatively communicating with the people. Just recently, on 17th September, after two busy and eventful days in Gujarat the Prime Minister spent over an hour personally replying to people who greeted him on his birthday. This created an electrifying atmosphere on Twitter.

Radio Kashmir both MW & FM fully operational.Did not depend on technology available in Kashmir only but also made use of Satellite Communication Technology

Jammu and Kashmir 's All India Radio commenced normal medium wave broadcasts

All India Radio stations in Jammu and Kashmir has now resumed normal medium wave service. It had earlier began beaming to an extent amid the floods, to send out vital life saving information to the people.

All the special audience programmes including the live shows with experts have been restored, including the outstation broadcasting segments and music broadcasts.

All the news bulletins from Delhi are also being aired across the valley. Earlier, the FM transmissions had been restored.
There was complete collapse of broadcast infrastructure as a consequence of the ferocious fury of the swirling waters in the widely popular Radio Kashmir, Srinagar, forcing it to go off the air.

AIR headquarters had deployed additional programme and technical professionals to help restore the signal of All India Radio at Srinagar initially the FM transmitter installed at Shankaracharya Hills, spared by flood fury.

Consequently, programmes like utility messages, helpline numbers and also having content offering psychological succor were broadcast. These were interspersed with suitable music, soothing recitations, befitting documentaries and greatest of all, ‘vox populi' expressing people's feelings, emotions, expectations and sentiments. AIR did not depend on the technology available in Kashmir only but also made use of satellite communication technology.

The sister station in Jammu also continuously broadcast appropriate programmes taking crucial information support to the listeners in the state. Jammu and Srinagar stations of AIR are serving the people of the state and also whomsoever they reach across the border and LOC for the past six decades.

"I remember that every house in our neighborhood would play 'Mahisasurmardini' at the crack of dawn and later end up with a cup of tea, samosa or kachauri and jalebi afterward,"

Over two decades after playwright actor and director Birendra Krishna Bhadra passed away, his voice continues to mesmerise All Radio listeners.

Bhadra's inimitable style of reciting the 'Mahisasura Mardini' (The annihilation of the Demon) has been broadcast on AIR since 1931.

This year too, the official radio station aired early this morning, the holy verses narrating story of Goddess Durga's descent to earth. The day is called Mahalaya.

"I remember that every house in our neighborhood would play 'Mahisasurmardini' at the crack of dawn and later end up with a cup of tea, samosa or kachauri and jalebi afterward," says Suchismita Chakravorty, a housewife in Kolkata.

"Mahalaya means Durga Pujo, one of the most eagerly waited festival of the Bengaliis just around the corner! Ma aschhen (the Mother is coming)," says Chakrovarty.

Bhadra's 'Mahisasur Mardini' first aired on radio in Kolkata. The program was organised by Premankur Aatorthi, Birendra Krishna Bhadra, Nripendra Krishna Mukhopadhya and Raichand Boral.

"Perhaps no other festival in the world has a week long curtain raiser to the actual festivities. The curtain raiser starts with of course 'Mahisasur Mardini' on AIR. Yes. Pujo is here," says Prabuddha Neogi a profesional working in the city.

The one-and half-hour radio program comprises a montage of recitation of scriptural verses along with Bengali devotional songs, classical music with a dash of acoustic melodrama adds up to building the rhythm to the four day fest.

"The rendition by Birendra Krishna Bhadra on All India Radio still gives me the chills. Nobody else can match his style and I don't get the feel of the festival unless and until I listen to it," says Arun Kumar a journalist who has been living in the city for over two decades.

The program which began as a live performance was later pre-recorded and played on the radio since 1958. It has also been translated into Hindi to similar orchestration and is broadcast at the same time for a pan-Indian audience.

"Mahalaya is the day when the process of creating idols of Durga are on the verge of completion and some are transported to various pandals or homes. An unexpected morning sight of idols being carried along the Ganga Ghats with Bhadra's rendition playing loud is a delight," says Dipa Das,a student.

So popular is Bhadra's version of the recitation that when in 1976, the voice of Bengali cinema stalwart, Uttam Kumar was employed for the programme, it did not get similar responses.

Listeners also say that dawn of television has not dimmed the charm of Bhadra's rendition.

"The present program on television on the enactment of 'Mahisasur mardini' is not that good. Doordarshan Bangla had once aired the dance drama with the original rendition of Bhadra, which was wonderful," says Kumar.

Kashmir confronted devastating deluge with unity, compassion

While Srinagar and South Kashmir were submerged in devastating deluge, the agony was equally felt in other parts of the valley. The pain was not just figurative; it materialized into tangible rescue and relief work for the people trapped in the flood-affected areas.

People from unaffected areas were proactive in providing emergency relief to the sufferers in Srinagar and other affected places.

During the two weeks of torment, people from all over Kashmir were seen carrying truckloads of emergency aid like food, water, blankets, medicines and other essentials to the flood-ravaged areas. Not just that, people also held special prayers in the mosques and Eidgahs for the safety of the people who were affected by the floods.

“We organized a special prayer meeting in Warsun area for the flood-affected,” Bilal Ahmad of Harie Kupwara.

The people even brought tippers, boats and actively took part in rescue operations in many affected areas.  Also announcements were made in the mosques for the collection of relief material.
“From the last three days we continued to travel to Srinagar to carry out rescue operation in Qamarwari area,” said Muhammad Hussain of Lalpora Lolab. He said around 20 youth with two tippers from his area carried out the rescue operation. “We almost rescued 90 people,” Hussain added.

When phone and internet service stopped, many rumors were also doing rounds about casualties. “The rumors about deaths in flood affected areas were depressing,” said Muhammad Iqbal of Chotipora Handwara.

People would remain glued to TV and Radio sets to know about the latest situation in the flood-affected areas. “Since morning we were glued to the radio for the updates about Srinagar and other flood affected areas,” said Hilal Ahmad of Trehgam Kupwara.

The youth in particular were on the forefront to collect relief and ensure its timely distribution. Despite the shortage of petroleum, many youth arranged vehicles to transport relief to the affected people in the city.

Radio link connects people in flooded Kashmir Valley

Thousands of messages were read out by anchors of All India Radio’s Kashmir station after the century’s worst-ever floods snapped almost all communication links like mobiles and landline telephone connections.

Radio Kashmir, as the AIR’s local station is known here, on September 4 started a messaging programme by keeping a dedicated e-mail address and telephones for receiving distress messages from the affected people.

An official of the Radio Kashmir said the station received nearly 2,000 emails per day of varied nature.

“We would get messages seeking help, we got messages about missing people, we would even get information about rising water level in the rivers and also villages, which we would air promptly in the hope of being of some help to people,” Syed Humayun Qaiser, an official of the AIR Srinagar, said.

Qaiser said while many employees of the Radio Kashmir were themselves affected by the floods, they gave preference to call of duty.

“It was our duty to act as a bridge between the authorities and the people … and also between the people amongst themselves,” he said. .

Qaiser said when the Radio Kashmir started the SMS service after floods in Srinagar, it was flooded with messages.
“We received an average of 2500 messages per day and it was not possible to read all of them We gave preference to informative messages like those seeking help and those seeking information about missing relatives,” he added.
While mobiles and telephones were not working in flood-affected areas, these services including Internet facilities were available in some areas not affected by the water.

Flood victims who had taken refuge in these areas were able to trace their loved ones quicker due to Radio Kashmir’s special broadcast on floods.

“I was happy to know my brother is safe when his message was read on Radio. Though I have not seen him yet, just the knowledge of him being alive is a great consolation,” Shamima, whose brother was stuck in Soura area of the city after floods hit Rajbagh, said.

Qaiser said the special broadcast from Radio Kashmir will continue in the coming days as well.

“We have passed through the worst time, hopefully, but we will continue the special broadcasts to help people deal with the aftermath of the floods,” he added.

In reply to a question, he said Radio Kashmir over the years has been trusted medium of information but the floods had only strengthened that image.

“Radio as a medium might have lost listeners over the years but that was not the case in Kashmir.I agree that floods have increased the popularity of this medium,” he added.

AIR adds five Indic languages to its free news alerts via SMS service; More planned

After launching text updates for news via SMS in English last year, All India Radio has extended the service to include 5 regional languages including Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, Dogri, and Nepali, reports AIR. Information and Broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar said that more regional languages added to the service over the coming years. The SMS service was initially launched in September 2013.

Speaking at the launch, Javadekar said that messages need also to be sent in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada, Gujarati, Bengali and Oriya, although he agreed that SMS scripts might be an issue. For those who are interested, one can sign up to the service from its website, or alternatively they can also send an SMS to 7738299899. Importantly, notifications via texts are also free from any data charges. Teleanalysis points out that the SMS service already has 300,000 subscribers

Javadekar pointed out the importance of distributing news across multiple platforms, saying that the challenge for AIR is that only FM Radio is available on mobile, and AIR, which operates on AM, isn’t available. The SMS service addresses this gap. A vast majority of Indians don’t carry an Internet enabled handset, and the data connectivity is not reliable at all places.

News agency planned

Javadekar also pointed towards plans to create a news agency combining Doordarshan (TV) and Akashvaani (All India Radio), combining their base of news correspondents. He didn’t put a timeline to this, but said that an agency will be created.

Recent developments around government SMS services

Hats Off to Radio Kashmir !

Radio Kashmir Srinagar resumes routine broadcasts after 14 days,FM was already up and running

Akashvani's Srinagar radio station popularly known as Radio Kashmir Srinagar resumed its routine broadcasts Saturday.
The radio station had to suspend operations Sep 7 when flood waters submerged its installations in Srinagar city trapping 12 staff members inside.
After two days, Radio Kashmir authorities had started an emergency FM broadcast service from atop the Shankaracharya hill.
In the absence of other means of public communication including landline and mobile phones, locals were relying on Radio Kashmir to send messages to friends and relatives trapped in inundated areas.
After working round-the-clock the engineering and other staff of the radio station resumed routine medium wave broadcast services at 11 a.m. Saturday.
All the state government's important public announcements including postponement of various exams, availability of relief material, healthcare advisories to check spread of water-borne diseases etc are being broadcast through Radio Kashmir since the local Doordarshan Kendra and mobile services across the Valley are yet to be restored fully.

Radio link connects people in flooded Kashmir Valley

Srinagar: 'This message is for Mohammad Ashraf from Jawahar Nagar. If he is listening to this broadcast, please contact Radio Kashmir to inform about your well being'.

This message was aired on Radio Kashmir, which was operating from a makeshift transmitting station on Shankaracharya Hill after the local station office was inundated by flood waters.

Thousands of messages like these were read out by anchors of All India Radio's Kashmir station after the century's worst-ever floods snapped almost all communication links like mobiles and landline telephone connections.

Radio Kashmir, as the AIR's local station is known here, on September 4 started a messaging programme by keeping a dedicated e-mail address and telephones for receiving distress messages from the affected people.

An official of the Radio Kashmir said the station received nearly 2,000 emails per day of varied nature.

"We would get messages seeking help, we got messages about missing people, we would even get information about rising water level in the rivers and also villages, which we would air promptly in the hope of being of some help to people," Syed Humayun Qaiser, an official of the AIR Srinagar, said.
Qaiser said while many employees of the Radio Kashmir were themselves affected by the floods, they gave preference to call of duty.

"It was our duty to act as a bridge between the authorities and the people ... And also between the people amongst themselves," he said.

Qaiser said when the Radio Kashmir started the SMS service after floods in Srinagar, it was flooded with messages.

"We received an average of 2500 messages per day and it was not possible to read all of them. We gave preference to informative messages like those seeking help and those seeking information about missing relatives," he added.

While mobiles and telephones were not working in flood-affected areas, these services including Internet facilities were available in some areas not affected by the water.

Flood victims who had taken refuge in these areas were able to trace their loved ones quicker due to Radio Kashmir's special broadcast on floods.

"I was happy to know my brother is safe when his message was read on Radio. Though I have not seen him yet, just the knowledge of him being alive is a great consolation," Shamima, whose brother was stuck in Soura area of the city after floods hit Rajbagh, said.

Qaiser said the special broadcast from Radio Kashmir will continue in the coming days as well.
"We have passed through the worst time, hopefully, but we will continue the special broadcasts to help people deal with the aftermath of the floods," he added.

In reply to a question, he said Radio Kashmir over the years has been trusted medium of information but the floods had only strengthened that image.

"Radio as a medium might have lost listeners over the years but that was not the case in Kashmir. I agree that floods have increased the popularity of this medium," he added.
